Okay, so you can’t actually make yourself luckier. No matter how many four leaf clovers you find or rabbit’s feet you rub, your life will be no different than if you smash a mirror or come across a black cat. That being said, there are ways you can increase your chances of success and happiness in life. And isn’t that just as good? We’re all about improving our quality of life, and do so with the help of research from The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor:
Shaun’s research shows that children who say the three things that they are grateful for each night at the dinner table can rewire their brain to be happier, even if their genes predispose them to be total grumps. Seriously—this research held true for three year-olds and eighty-three year-olds alike. And even better? Higher levels of happiness lead to higher levels of intelligence, up to three times as much creativity, and better problem solving skills.
Stay Off the News (Kind Of)
You are 27% more likely to say you’ve had a bad day when you listen to just three minutes of negative news in the morning—that’s really all it takes. When you start the day off feeling helpless, your mind automatically deletes opportunities it might otherwise be open to.
Choose Your Friends Wisely
Did you know that your mood is an aggregate of the five people you spend the most time around? Good vibes and bad vibes alike are contagious, so make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into!
Keep In Touch
After you’ve chosen the best people to surround yourself with, be sure you make time to see them. Social connection is the greatest predictor of long term happiness and is as predictive of how long you will live as obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking. Think twice on those nights when you feel like sending a text to cancel your plans–you will be happier for it in the end.
